In 1916, Melbourne-based MacRobertson’s Confectionery developed this building as a distribution point for their growing trade across NSW. The company was expanding due to the imports disruption caused by WWI, including sweets and chocolates. They created some Australian classics such as Cherry Ripe, Freddo Frog and, of course, Old Gold. In 1967, Cardbury’s acquired MacRobertson’s Confectionery and the building was put into different commercial uses until today. We named this coffee shop ‘Old Gold’ in celebration of the recent history of this place. And because it somehow describes what coffee is for us: that thing we sip every morning and makes us happy as a kid with chocolate.
